It's been too long: layers, primary colors, and Jacob Lawrence

June 17, 2024 by Edward Traub

Although this work is in progress, these two images show a progression. I’ve been focused on multiple layers of paint and color focusing the first layers on primary colors. The most recent layer on the right shows the current state as I seek to allow the first layers to still play a role without being overt. My intent is to allow the layers to be discovered without being obvious or flamboyant. The primary color effort has been inspired by a book I picked up about Jacob Lawrence who masterfully worked with similar color visions. I do take time to look at this piece prior to the subsequent layer, but I think it’s close!

The two images below, also show a slight progression. I’ve never paid any attention to acrylic paint, but have experimented with some gold acrylic paint in both works in this post. I have no interest in the toxic smells that normally come from oil based metallic paints. Again, more layers.
